In advanced market economies, competition is increasingly taking the form of hyper-competition, in which competitive advantage can be both quickly acquired and lost. Under these conditions, enterprises should be prepared for constant changes that require active actions in the market, such as product and resource flexibility, speed of response to competitors’ actions. The staff of enterprises should have a modern organizational culture, in particular high cognitive potential and readiness for change. This does not mean that strategic management, as an enterprise management system, loses its meaning today and is replaced by the art of improvisation. It simply reduces the time for a strategic response, which requires a permanent effective system for monitoring the market and the state of the enterprise’s resource base, as well as the availability of an emergency strategic response system to the emergence of a threat. As for Russian enterprises, both the degree of intensity of competition and the stage of market evolution at which they are located determine the relevance of strategic changes (transformations) to achieve sustainable competitiveness in the market.
