Collected Sunday sermons of Anthony of Sourozh. The Bishop is known primarily for his word, preaching the Gospel to modern people, which is at the same time very simple, understandable to everyone, but also deep.

Antony of Sourozh, as you know, did not read sermons from a piece of paper. This was the case from the very beginning of his ministry in England. Not knowing English well, Anthony of Sourozh once read a prepared sermon at the beginning of his ministry. It turned out very boring. He was advised to improvise. “But it will turn out funny,” objected the future great preacher. “That’s good, people will listen,” was the answer. Since then, Anthony Surozhky always spoke himself, without a pre-prepared text. It is sermons that are the main part of the legacy of Anthony of Sourozh, truly living, sincere and at the same time very deep. The sermons of Anthony of Sourozh conveyed to modern people the Orthodox faith in its patristic purity, preserving the Gospel simplicity and depth.

“Over the last 25 years, I probably made it a rule not to read the Gospel in advance, which will be read during the service. Of course, I still know all these readings almost by heart, so it’s not “suddenly” a completely unknown gospel: but I try to read it aloud to the people, then continue to serve the liturgy and let this text reach me deeply. Experience shows me that every time the word of the Gospel gives rise to some kind of answer, and then, when I go out to preach, I simply say: “We read this and that, and this is what I want to tell you about it...” - exactly that, which hurt me.

It happened once - how can I tell you? - very sad. I was in a minor key, tired, I read the text, and it didn’t reach me. And throughout the entire service, I experienced with horror the fact that the Lord addressed me with His word, but nothing wavered in my soul. When it came time to preach (I always preach before dismissal), I went out and said, “This is what happened. You understand how terrible this is: the Lord speaks some words to me, and all I can answer Him is: It doesn’t get through, I have nothing to answer You. The words seem to fall on rocky ground...” I said so, and it was also a sermon, and one that corresponds to the experience of many. Several parishioners told me: “Thank you for saying this, because it happens to us too, but we would never dare to say it.” “Online publication Electronic library “Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh” (mitras.ru/) .
