The Book of the Dead, Bardo Thodol, and the Tibetan sacred book are read, like our psalter, over the coffin of the deceased within 40 days from the date of death, excluding the first three days. Of course, when the deceased is poor, the reading is shortened, and sometimes they are only remembered at all, as with us on the third, ninth, twentieth and fortieth day. Or they will simply put it under the head of the deceased. This book is an instruction on how to behave to the Deceased in the Next World. On the other hand, this is an instruction to us, the living, on how and what to prepare for, while still alive, in relation to, alas, the inevitable departure from here. This book is about what will happen to us when we die, and how it should prepare for what awaits us on the Border and beyond, until (as the book claims) we once again fall out Here, back into another memoryless Existence.
