The book tells about the fate of a shipping company, the owner of which is disappointed that he does not have a son to help with business at work. He initially rejects his daughter's love, but eventually reconciles with her before he dies. The plot features many themes specific to Dickens, such as marriages, child abuse, betrayal, deception, and relationships between people from different classes.
