In this volume, for the first time, the uncensored text is baked to hang “Canine Eggs” and the story “Dog’s Heart” (not only not published in the USSR, but also arrested there). In addition, for the first time, all three stories of Bulgakov are brought together - which allows us to assess their unity. There is a commonality of themes and stylistic techniques - at the stage when Bulgakov moved away from the historical and biographic material of the Civil War and turned to modern urban life, with its bustle and contradictions. In the stories, as nowhere else, Bulgakov shows his worldview and attitude to the worldview of the “new people”; he preferred the “broad evolution” of the revolution. That is why neither the Devil's Eggs nor the Rock's Eggs were reprinted after 1925. — As for the “Dog’s Heart”, as E. writes Proffer in the preface to the present volume: "For the first time Bulgakov read "The Dog's Heart" to the editors of "Nedra" in February 1925 . They immediately recognized this work as remarkable and began a proper, and ultimately unsuccessful struggle for its publication. On May 21, they returned the manuscript to Bulgakov for the first time, offering him to send the “corrected” version (apparently to the censor) along with the letter: “author’s, tearful, with an explanation of all the tax collectors, etc.” Bulgakov considered such a proposal to be corrosive, emphasized the word “tearful” and on this case he left. In the summer of 1925. Angarsky, not wanting to leave a major achievement of Russian prose unpublished, resumed his attempts. A year later, the story attracted the attention of the Chekists who came to Bulgakov’s apartment and confiscated the manuscript along with the writer’s diaries.
