This manual combines an essay-guide to the most important concepts of artistic translation and a collection of texts with training assignments and comments. It complements the curriculum on the basics of artistic translation for students of the translation department developed by the author. The manual consists of three parts. The first part is a brief essay-guide to the main theoretical concepts in modern models of artistic translation. The need for such a guide is caused by the lack of modern textbooks on literary translation, the complexity of the modern scientific language, as well as the requirements of the curriculum itself, which reflects the concept of the author. The second part contains personalities - brief creative biographies of some outstanding Russian translators who contributed to the development of translational thought and practice in Russia. These include mainly those names that are most closely related to the issues raised in the course program. The third part of the manual is a collection of artistic texts (in accordance with the sections of the program) with comments and assignments for analysis and translation. The texts include samples of English, American and Russian fiction and folklore, intended for translation from both English into Russian and Russian into English. Particular attention is paid to the translation of Russian literature into English in the context of differences between domestic and foreign schools of artistic translation. The exercises accompanying the texts for comparative analysis and translation are aimed at various activities: additional reading, analysis of the source text, comparative analysis, creative tasks for creating their own translations. The manual is addressed primarily to students of philological specialties who study foreign languages, literature, translation and translation studies, and may be of interest to literary scholars, linguists, translators, as well as anyone who is engaged in or interested in artistic translation.
