"The Recruiting Officer" (Ukrainian title: "Офицер-бербвычный") is a farce comedy by the famous Irish playwright George Farquhar. The action takes place in the 18th century in an English town where a recruiting unit is stationed. The main character, Captain Plume, does his job actively and energetically, luring young English boys to serve in the army. However, things get complicated when he himself becomes the object of admiration for the local women, and yet finds himself in the entanglements of love and intrigue. The comedic plot, sharp dialogues and curious situations make this play a vivid example of an English restaurant in a theater. George Farquhar's work is marked by deep humor, subtle observations and a satirical background, reflecting the social problems of the society of the time.
