Melito, bishop of Sardia, in Lydia († about 177), one of the “great scholars” of the church of that time; presented Marcus Aurelius with an apology for Christianity; traveled around the East in order to collect lists of St. Scriptures. Origen accused him of anthropomorphism, and Anastasius (6th century) of Montanism, but completely unfairly. Of his many works, a list of which is preserved in Eusebius’s “Ecclesiastical History,” the following have come down to us: “The Key” - an explanation of the names found in the Bible (Min, “Patrologiae cursus,” vol. V) and “Preface to the extract from St. books", containing the first ever list of the canon of sacred books.
