By releasing a translation of Gelders’s novel “Air War of 1936,” we mean not so much the literary qualities of this work, which is trying to depict in artistic form a possible picture of a future war, but rather the train of thought of an author competent in military matters, outlining a whole series of what is expected in the coming years of technological advances in the field of aviation and seeking to concretely imagine the impact that these advances should have on the forms of tactical and operational art. For these reasons, we have excluded from the translation all those passages that are not directly related to the coverage of the military issues raised by the author and are intended only to make his work more suitable for “easy reading.” Because of this, the entire romantic part naturally had to be dropped from the translation. Undoubtedly, the thoughts of the author of this book will be of significant interest not only to our “airmen”, but also to wider circles of the Red Army.
