This book arose from lectures I gave in November - December 1951 at several American universities - Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago and others. At the beginning I have placed, as a fitting introduction, “The Tale of Two Conversations,” which I wrote in 1932, and have also included here the essay “The Love of God and the Idea of God,” written in 1943. In the section “Religion and Philosophy” "I used some excerpts from an address on this issue, with which I opened a meeting of the Schopenhauer Society in Frankfurt am Main in 1929 dedicated to this topic.
