Tumanyan deeply understood the truth that in art the national and universal are closely related to each other, and that only when depicting the life and national character of the native people can such thoughts and ideals be expressed that will be close and understandable to all peoples. The poet himself said: “The closer the writer will be to his people, the more he will delve into his folklore, the greater his greatness, the universal significance of his work.” Tumanyan's creative principles are most fully represented in poems and ballads.
