The first volume includes works written by M. Bitter in 189294. Of these, the following works were included by the author in the collections of his works: “Makar Chudra”, “Girl and Death”, “Emelyan Pylyai”, “About the chiche who lied, and about the woodpecker lover of truth”, “Grandfather Arkhip and Lyonka”, “Old Izergil”, “Chelkash”, “My companion”, “Error”, “Once in the autumn”, “Song of the Falcon”. These works were repeatedly edited by M. himself. Bitter. They were last edited by the writer in the preparation of the collection of works of 1923-1927 .. in the "Book" edition. The remaining works of the 1st volume were first included in the collection of works of the GIHL in 1949 . With few exceptions, these works have not been re-edited by Gorky.
