One of the first works of Alexander Belyaev . For the first time the novel was published on the pages of the fifth or eighth issues of the magazine “World Pathfinder” for 1926. The following year, 1927, he was published in the first author's collection of Belyaev together with the "Island of the Lost Ships" .. Then the novel was not reprinted for a long time, until in 1957 it was reprinted by the magazine “Knowledge is Power” (No. 4-5) It was published several times in the following years.. The idea of searching for the lost civilization of Atlantis Belyaev was prompted by a note published in the French newspaper Figaro. In the first quarter of the 20th century, such societies arose and burst quite often-entrepreneurial adventurers skillfully speculated on the increased interest in the history of Atlantis (Atlantamania) that spread at that time. The material for the description of Atlantis itself Belyaev drew from the book Roger Devin “Disappeared continent .. Atlantis, the sixth part of the world" (in Russian under the name "Atlantis, the disappeared continent" came out in 1926), which is mentioned directly in the text of the story (see page .). 136) To a large extent, the story is an artistic version of Devin's book - just as "The Island of the Dead Ships" was a literary version of an American action movie.
