The Katha Upanishad, one of the 108 major Upanishads, is included in the Krishna Yajur Veda and consists of two chapters. Its main content is the legend of a poor devout brahmana who sent his son as a sacrifice to the god of death (Yama). The god of death Yama, in response to the request of the young brahmana sage Nachiketas to reveal to him the secret of the transition from this life to the next, begins his instruction with the following: that one is good (sreyas), the other is pleasant (preyas); both “fetter” a person, but the winner is the one who chooses the first and not the second, and the preference for the good over the pleasant is the hallmark of the wise.
