Time has gradually distanced us from the memorable days when the mountains of the Caucasus echoed with the fierce guerrilla warfare against the White counterrevolution in Southern Russia. At the forefront of this struggle was Nikolai Gikalo, the leader of a red partisan unit formed in August 1919. I had the honor of serving as his personal aide and secretary of the headquarters for the Terka regional group of the Red partisan forces. In my memoirs, I wanted to share with the younger generation the stories of those who, amid the flames of battle in 1918–1920, fought to defend Soviet power in Chechnya and Ingushetia. I am deeply grateful for the invaluable assistance I received from Z.M. Kibiryeva, head of the party archive of the Chechen-Ingush Regional Committee of the CPSU; E.I. Kobzeva, head of the archive department at the Council of Ministers of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; and V.T. Rzhevskaya, research fellow at the Chechen-Ingush Scientific Research Institute of History, Language, and Literature; as well as M.N. Muzaev, a scientific researcher at the same institute. Their support greatly enriched this work.
