...What creates our individuality? Nothing more than our memories. If we lose them, we cease to be who we are. Jean-Claude Duniac uses this point of view inimitably in his short story. Jean-Claude Duniac, born in 1957, has a degree in applied mathematics and works as a high-power computer specialist at Airbus France in Toulouse, where he lives . He has been writing science fiction since the early eighties. He currently has seven published novels, six collections of short stories, and numerous awards to his credit. Against the notorious attitude of the English-speaking world to ignore writers working in other languages, Jean-Claude Duniac has developed his own strategy: since his profession involves continuous international contacts and means an excellent command of English, he is able to translate his stories himself and - after testing them with English speakers - offer them to international science fiction magazines. And in this he succeeded. The popular English magazine Interzone has already published five of his stories in recent years, two of which were reprinted in the American Yearbook of the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy for Teens in 1998 and 2002. Two of his stories have so far appeared in Full Spectrum, two others in the Australian magazine Altair and two in the Canadian magazine On Spec. Jean-Claude Duniac is considered a recognized master of the short story in French science fiction, although he himself claims that he writes short stories mainly because the pretentious profession that provides him with bread leaves too little time for writing. But this is probably not the only reason that forced him to write his latest novel to date, “Étoiles mourantes” (“Dying Stars”), in collaboration with Aerdahl, another famous science fiction writer in France. Both received the Eiffel Tower Society Prize and the Ozone Prize for the novel in 1999, and now the novel has been published in Italy. Lack of time? Jean-Claude Duniac also writes lyrics for various French singers. And this activity, in turn, inspired him to write the novel Go Amundsen, the story of a mediocre rock singer who, along with his zombie orchestra, undertakes a dubious tour of Antarctica... One thing is clear: Jean-Claude Duniac has no shortage of original ideas and masterfully embodies them, armed with the powerful power of language.
