The work of the late Roman historian Jordan “On the origin and deeds of the Getae (Getica)” is one of the largest works of the early European Middle Ages, one of the most interesting sources on the history of the entire era as a whole. Jordanes sets out the historical fate of the Getae (Goths), starting from the time when they left Scandinavia and landed near the mouth of the Vistula. He describes their advance south to the Black Sea, and then west as far as Italy and Spain, where they formed two powerful states - the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. The text of the Latin edition of Getica is reproduced from the edition of T. Mommsen. He completed his work in 551. The text of the new edition has been newly edited and significantly supplemented based on the author’s copy of E. Ch. Skrzhinskaya. New materials are included. The gigantic historical panorama includes vivid pictures of the most fateful events for the entire European civilization - the invasion of the formidable warrior Attila on Rome, the “battle of the nations” on the Catalaunian fields, the death of the Roman Empire, the first religious wars, etc. Information about the ancient Slavs is also of great interest on the Vistula, Dnieper, Dniester and Danube. Not only as a researcher who relied on written sources, but also as an eyewitness to many events, Jordan presented in his presentation a grandiose picture of the “great migration of peoples” in the 4th–5th centuries. He outlined the movement of tribes from the east and north and their struggle with the Roman Empire on its Danube borders, in its Balkan and western provinces. The work was brought by the author to his days.
