Sergei Leopoldovich Antushkin is an unremarkable actor in a provincial theater, not at all brilliant with intelligence, but perfectly memorizing the texts of his roles. He spends his life in dullness and petty acting squabbles, but one day his life changes dramatically. Directly from the premiere showing of Gogol’s play “The Inspector General,” Sergei Leopoldovich is kidnapped by unknown men in black. The actor finds himself on a rich estate not far from the capital, he is cared for, pampered and cherished in every possible way. But who needs a provincial actor? Soon Sergei Leopoldovich will learn the shocking truth. In the next presidential elections, Antushkin will have to play the role of a candidate, and, if he wins, the head of state. The actor finds himself in the center of the pre-election whirlpool, his “team” uses the dirtiest methods of political struggle, black PR flows like a river. Antushkin’s good appearance and personal charm combined with the use of advanced political “technologies” they very soon make him the favorite of the people and the leader of the race. The candidate with a smart look reads out memorized speeches, without understanding anything in them - but understanding is not required from him. Antushkin becomes president. Everywhere he is accompanied by an assistant - the inconspicuous old man Oleg Vlasych, a professional theater prompter.
