Human consciousness manifests itself strangely and whimsically. Human life is not like a straight line or a curved line rather it is a chain of increasingly complex relationships between past, present and future events. Every experience we have is complicated by previous experiences, and when we remember them, it is again complicated by our present circumstances and everything that has happened since. That is why, when Ronald Cumberland ten years later recalled his thoughts on the grave of a German soldier, these memories were different from his thoughts at the time, although it seemed to him that there was no difference. They changed under the influence of all that he experienced and changed his mind afterwards, and by contrast steel may be even more bitter.
