In 213 BC, the great general Hannibal, fighting against Rome in enemy territory, conceived to capture Sicily - and with this blow to kill two lions at once: to strengthen himself, having received an excellent springboard for further attack on Rome, and at the same time to deprive the Republic of its main breadbasket. Hannibal's ally on the island was Syracuse, an old Greek city that had recently come out of obedience to Rome. To finally attract his rulers to his side, the Carthaginian commander sent a young Gannon to Syracuse, one of his best commanders.
