Frances Stevens (1884–1948) has been called the inventor of the dark fantasy genre and a pioneer of women's fiction in the United States. In her novella “Sunfire” (1923), a group of brave researchers discovers a mysterious pyramid in South America, where the heroes are in danger of death.
