The tragedy was written in Macedonia at the end of the life of Euripides and staged in Athens posthumously. The myth of how Artemis demanded a ransom from the Greeks going on the Trojan campaign for the passing wind - the daughter of Agamemnon, Iphigenia - has already been used in the tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles that have not come down to us. Euripides does not explain why the goddess demanded an unheard-of gift (the Greeks did not bring human sacrifices); Aeschylus tells of a bad omen - eagles that tore a pregnant hare. There is also a version according to which Agamemnon killed a deer in the sacred grove of Artemis and was punished for it. Replacing the victim on the altar with lanya and transforming Iphigenia either into an immortal companion of Artemis or into her priestess is a very ancient motif. Euripides develops it in "Iphigenia in Tauris".
