Umberto Eco (p.) 1932) - an outstanding Italian writer, known to the Russian reader primarily as the author of the novels "The Name of the Rose" (1980), "Foucault's Pendulum" (1988) and "The Island Before" (1995) In the world scientific community, Professor Umberto Eco, honorary doctor of many foreign universities, is famous primarily for his works on mediaeval studies, cultural history and semiotics. However, taking an active civil position and regularly speaking in the periodicals, he became a kind of "moral barometer" for Italian society, at least for a significant part of it. Despite all this, Eco does not often speak directly on the topics of ethics and public morality. This collection of essays, published by Bombiani in 1997, is one of the rare exceptions.
