The monograph reveals the problem of developing a unified metalanguage for describing the semantics of verb lexemes on the basis of an experimental study of a number of English and Russian verbs .. The conducted research and the obtained empirical data make it possible to establish a semantic syntax of the prototypical values of the studied verbs in English and Russian, as well as cognitive mechanisms that affect the appearance of nontrivial values. Among such mechanisms, the authors include a change in the actant framework of the verb, the semantic type of the predicate in relation to the time axis, the functioning of the verb in a different cognitive construct.
