Two volumes of American Notes were published in October 1842. The material for "Notes" was diaries and notebooks. Work on the book took place for several months immediately after his return to his homeland .. The trip to the United States deeply disappointed Dickens . This feeling permeates the book itself, published with dedication: “... those of my friends in America ... who love for their homeland does not prevent them from listening to the truth...” In the press, “American Notes” were met with indignation. American criticism expected an enthusiastic panegyric from Dickens and, failing to find him, accused the writer of slander. English criticism was confused by Dickens's new notes of political satire and also reacted unfavorably to the book. "American Notes" has been translated into Russian several times. The first abbreviated translation, entitled Notes on America, appeared as early as 1843 in Library for Reading. The full text was published twice, in 1882 and 1889. This translation is from the publication of the text of the Complete Works of Dickens, ed. Chapman and Hall . Dickens's Italian essays were first published in the London Daily News (late JanuaryMarch 1846). ). They were called on the pages of the newspaper "Letters of a traveler from the road" and were signed by the pseudonym Dickens Boz. A few months later, a separate edition of them was published under the changed title “Pictures of Italy” .. In the same 1846, Dickens's essays were translated into many European languages, including Russian. The Russian translation was printed in the "Notes of the Fatherland" for 1846-1847 (t.) XLVI, XLIX, L and LI); the translation printed in the XLVI volume is from the French translation published in the Revue Britannique, the rest from the first English edition. Other translations into Russian, except for a small excerpt printed in the Journal of Military Educational Institutions, did not appear.
