Gerald Darrell (19251995) famous English zoologist and traveler, one of the cult figures of the 20th century Darrell's books have long been the gold fund of world literature and are very popular with readers around the world. Being obsessed with the idea of creating his own zoo since childhood, Darrell rented an estate on the island of Jersey, where he settled the first animals brought by him from West Africa, but for representatives of the South American fauna Darrell, his wife Jackie and secretary Sophie had to go to Argentina. The Land of Shorokhs describes their eight-month journey across the country, which includes hours of driving along the coast in search of penguins, fur seals and the main goal of the expedition - elephant seals. Of course, on the way Darrell and his companions met and other animals inhabiting the Argentine pampa: from insects to parrots, from armadillos to penelopes.
