"Return" is a fascinating story, because I wrote it for "Mysterious Stories" - in those days I was one of the "main" authors. I grew up to $20 for a story, I was blessed with wealth, I used to get paid half a cent a word, now I get paid a penny. I wrote this story, sent it to the publishers, and they RETURNED it: they said we don't need one, it doesn't look like traditional ghost stories. [I sent] a story to Mademoiselle - they replied by telegram: such a story does not fit our magazine, so we will change the magazine under it. They did a Halloween issue, invited other writers; Kay Boyle wrote an article, and Charles Addams agreed to do a full-page illustration.
