The book of the British artist, poet, art theorist William Morris (1834-1896) “News from Nowhere, or the Age of Calm” (1890) a classic of utopian literature of the 19th century In it, the author summarized his socio-political views and depicted the upcoming ideal communist society of strong and healthy people living in harmony with nature, who abandoned industrial production in favor of creative handicrafts. It is a kind of orienting model and political testament of the founder and ideological inspirer of the Arts and Crafts movement, a friend and closest follower of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The first complete translation of William Morris’ utopian work into Russian was published a century ago, in 1923, but today it is of undoubted interest both for art historians and thought historians, and for a wide range of readers. This edition also includes as an appendix William Morris's novella The Dream of John Ball, translated by Zinaida Wengerova, which has not been reprinted since 1906.
