The plot of the book takes place in the same world as described in Herulv's Journey, ten years after the events described there. History in this world has long gone a different way than in our reality: the Carolingian empire never happened here, and the Baltic is ruled by Veleti, a powerful power of the Western Slavs, in alliance with pagan Frisia and Denmark. However, new threats are rising - from the south and north, east and west - there are strong enemies everywhere, greedy for the wealth of the Amber Sea. In Veleti itself, everything is also not so simple - and the struggle for trade routes to the east is intertwined with the intrigues of pagan priests and a mysterious witch who appeared unknown from where and stubbornly leads her game.
