At the end of 1926, Nabokov wrote the “University Poem” - 882 verses, 63 stanzas of 14 lines. The main subject of study in the poem seems to be loneliness, be it the loneliness of an emigrant, a student or an old maid. “The University Poem” is also a tribute to Pushkin. The poem has the same number of lines in the song and the same structure of the song as in “Eugene Onegin,” and its stanza carefully reverses the form that Pushkin invented for his stanza: the fourteenth line in Pushkin’s scheme becomes the first in Sirin, the feminine rhyme turns into men's, and men's into women's. Sirin shows the young poets he reviewed what can be done with poetry: a general outline, individual discoveries. Despite all its fragile charm and magnificent commentary on Pushkin, the “University Poem” still seems too restrained, there is too little Pushkin music in it and Pushkin's passion. Although Pushkin could be fragile or cold, he always seemed to drink life in one gulp. “The University Poem,” a marvelous porcelain set of thirty-six pieces, only allows us to sip life in sweet little sips. However, Ivan Alekseevich Bunin, the great elder of emigrant literature, had a different opinion. Immediately after the publication of the poem, he wrote a letter to Sirin, in which he spoke extremely warmly about it. B. Boyd. "Vladimir Nabokov. Russian years"
