This book could safely be called “The Forgotten Symphonist,” if not for one thing. The music of Janis Ivanov is a Latvian composer with Russian roots, we do not have to forget it, they simply never knew it or did not want to know it. It so happened that it still remains isolated from the mass audience, as it once was with the music of another Soviet author - the now widely known N.. I. Myaskovsky . Ivanov's language, on the one hand prone to lengthy melos, and on the other - not alien to harmonic difficulties, seems rather confusing, and the heavy legacy of the "anti-Soviet" popularity of his works among the performers does not contribute to. Meanwhile, he is a very interesting composer, combining in his work the traditions of Russian music and the peculiarities of the Scandinavian symphonic wave. The origins of his style in the symphonism of Tchaikovsky, Kuchkists, Scriabin and Soviet classics . In addition, he was influenced by French Romantic Impressionists (Frank, Debussy), as well as folklore. Latgale . The range of Ivanov's creativity is unusually wide: lyrical symphonic sketches at the beginning of creative activity to the dramatic symphonism of the 2nd half of the XX century, from late romanticism and impressionism to the development of avant-garde means of musical expression, from Soviet symphonism to mixed techniques and new simplicity In his music attracts melodiousness, the propensity for broad breathing themes combining Slavic sadness and Baltic restrained beauty , Stress , Melancholy , Color , Lyrics and Epics coexisting nearby, Dramatic Conflict and Psychologism , to splatteredadrenaline (not for nothing foreign music lovers jokingly called. Ivanov "Myaskovsky on Valium", although Ivanov is good and himself, without any comparisons, albeit quite successful). It is hoped that this publication will fill the gap of our ignorance and bring the listener closer to the music of a wonderful composer who left a noticeable mark on the country's musical culture.
