The concept of an open society is based on the recognition that our understanding of the world by its nature is imperfect. Anyone who claims that he owns the truth in the last resort claims it unreasonably, and he is able to put this truth into practice only by imposing his views on those who disagree .. The result of such coercion is a closed society where freedom of thought and freedom of expression are suppressed. On the contrary, if we are willing to admit that we can be wrong, then we are able to achieve a better understanding of reality, although we will never acquire absolute knowledge. By acting on these perceptions, we can create a society open to endless improvement. An open society will never be perfect, but it has the great virtue that it provides freedom of thought and speech, that it provides ample opportunities for experimentation and creativity.
