Herzen contains two great philosophical works “Diletantism in Science” and “Letters on the Study of Nature”, relating to the years 1842-1846. This volume includes the works "Diletantism in Science" and "Letters on the Study of Nature" were first published in the journal "Domestic Notes" and during Herzen's lifetime were not reprinted. Manuscripts of both works are unknown. In this edition, the texts are printed on the first printed journal publications. The most significant amendments made to the journal text are specified in the comments. The volume publishes a fragment of Goethe's "Nature" and "Excerpts from Bacon" translated by Herzen. These texts, printed in the "Notes of the Fatherland" as part of the "Letter on the Study of Nature", were not previously included in the collections of Herzen's works.
