These works reflect the ideological, political, philosophical and artistic development of young Herzen. These are the first milestones on the way that Herzen, a noble revolutionary, went to revolutionary democracy, Herzen the romantic - to materialism in philosophy and realism in the artistic method. From these works one can trace how Herzen’s youthful romantic, idealistic views, according to his own expression, were processed “into revolution, into socialism”. From the following volumes of this edition, the first volume differs in that it consists mainly of works that were not printed by Herzen himself neither at the time of their creation nor later. This is due to the fact that we are dealing with the experiences of a novice writer, often incomplete, and the fact that the exiled Herzen was especially difficult to speak in print. Works included in the first volume are printed from sources of various nature: by autographs, by lifetime publications under the control of the author, by lifetime publications without his knowledge or control, finally, by the texts of later publications, the primary sources of which are lost or are still not found
