As part of the ongoing work in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to revise Chapter 5 “Navigational safety” of the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), it is expected to soon begin the introduction of a fundamentally new automatic information (identification) system (AIS) in the navy. The implemented AIS will have three purposes: to exchange navigation data between ships when they diverge at sea. to transmit data on the vessel and its cargo to the coastal services ; to transmit navigation data from the vessel to the Coastal Vessel Traffic Management Systems (VMS) and to ensure more accurate and reliable navigation within the system area.
