Fourth volume of the Collected Works of M. M. Bakhtin is completely devoted to the book about F. Rabelais . In the second half-volume, the text of the third edition of Franois Rabelais's Creativity and Popular Culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (1965) is published. Here is published the article “Rable and Gogol (The Art of the Word and Folk Laughing Culture)” (1940, 1970), which grew from the final fragment of the first edition of the book about Rabela in an independent work. The section “Comments and Appendix” covers the history of Rabelais in the 1960s; traces the history of the main ideas and concepts from the sketches of the 1930s to the 1965 edition; restored the sources of the book, its “dialogizing background”, the genesis and meaning of the main terms.
