In ancient times, myths played about the same role that science later took on. They interpreted the essence of the phenomena of nature, explained how the world came into being and how the world works, and what place man occupies in it. Mythology was a complex system of representations, based on the spiritual experience of many generations, created a holistic “picture of the world”. A significant difference between mythological interpretations and scientific ones is that mythology uses the language of symbols. Each object or phenomenon relates to a number of other objects, phenomena and abstract concepts and receives a special, symbolic meaning. The symbolism of myths is not an entertaining fairy tale fiction, as it may seem at first glance. It organizes the world around and fills it with meaning and harmony.
