The Rigveda is the oldest monument of Indian spiritual culture. It consists almost entirely of hymns addressed to various gods of the Vedic era, among which the three main places belong to Indra, Agni and Soma. According to the esoteric tradition, which was continued by Hindu tantras in later times, these gods symbolize both the external and internal energies of man, which he uses in his spiritual practice - sadhana. Sri Aurobindo translated the hymns dedicated to Agni into English, as he considered them to be of paramount importance. Agni, Fire is the symbol and direct embodiment of the universal Consciousness-Power, the first principle by which Sri Aurobindo intended to realize the great descent of Supramental Consciousness to earth. In yoga, Agni symbolizes inner fire - the will and active force that allows you to perform spiritual practice and achieve great perfection, freedom, clarity of consciousness and immortality through it. Sri Aurobindo translated the hymns of Agni, conveying in poetic form the main experiences associated with the spiritual revelation contained in these hymns. Thus his translations differ from classical academic ones, considering the Rigveda exclusively as a ritual and liturgical collection of hymns. In addition, Sri Aurobindo proposed his method of working on the language of the Rigveda, the basic principles of which are set out at the end of this book.
