The book that the reader holds in his hands is based on tape recordings made by Professor Tavger in the last year of his life. Ben-Zion Tavger came to Israel in 1972 from the Novosibirsk Academic Town. He spent many years fighting the KGB and Soviet authorities for the right to live in his homeland. They hunted him, they persecuted him, they hounded him, trying to find a plausible excuse and condemn the “traitor.” But God was merciful - Tavger came to Israel and after some time settled in Kiryat Arba, in Hebron. Those who came to Israel in the 70s witnessed the birth of the Jewish Yishuv in Kiryat Arba, the heroic struggle of Rabbi Levinger and participants in the Gush Emunim movement with the Israeli authorities and military administration for the right of Jews to settle and live throughout Eretz Israel. Professor Tavger was also an active participant in this struggle. Even then, more than 20 years ago, having perfectly understood the situation, he knew how to act in order to revive the Jewish presence in Hebron. He could not come to terms with the fact that Jews in their country do not have the right to live and pray where they want, to visit holy places, to move freely, without fear. The “policy” of the Israeli authorities in those years (as, indeed, now) put Jews in a dependent position: a Jew cannot do what he wants without looking at the reaction of the Arab - if he doesn’t like something, he will throw stones at the Jew, set him on fire the machine, in other words, will find a way to express its “protest”, and the authorities will definitely intervene and “calm down” the Jew. And this is in a state that calls itself Jewish...
