The book of the most prominent philologist and writer of the second half of the 20th century is a deep philosophical analysis of the main trends in the art of this period, a work that largely determined the further development of the cultural sciences. The author focuses on the phenomenon of "open work", that is, one in which the creative role of the "performer" sharply increases, not just offering a particular interpretation, but becoming a real co-author. Eco does not confine himself to art history problems, he boldly operates with analogies and concepts from modern mathematics, physics, information theory; does not overlook the social aspects of art.
