We are talking about three old men living in a Home for Military Veterans. They are veterans of the First World War. René has lived here for 25 years, Fernand for 10 years, and Gustav for six months. Fernand has a shrapnel in his head and constantly faints, Rene has a bad leg, Gustav is almost motionless and does not go anywhere. And they saw little in life, as if they had never been young. But neither they, nor the author cry over them. On the contrary, laughter is the element of the play, and tenderness, and love for a person. For the first time in many years, a comedy appeared without blackness, without cruelty, without cynicism, where old people forever remain young not after death, but during life, where their reckless escape from reality is perceived as the only correct decision and is confirmed by the miracle of a revived statue. The play was nominated for an award Molière in five nominations (2003), and the English translation made by Tom Stoppard received the Laurence Olivier Award in the category “Best Comedy” (2006). Performances of the play were staged in many Russian theaters, including the Theatre. E. Vakhtangov and “Satyricone”. There is also a Russian translation by Gayane Isahakyan-Arnoux called “Poplars and the Wind.”
