One of the most acute questions of the physics of the cosmos is the question of the structure of the universe as a whole, its evolution in the past, its future; the question of physical processes in the early stages of the expansion of the surrounding world, the processes that led to the formation of galaxies and stars. Recent astronomical discoveries provide a reliable observational basis for the development of these questions, which constitute the so-called cosmological problem. Equally important are the problems of the evolution of individual celestial bodies and their systems, the stability of this evolution, and the problems of rapid catastrophic processes in celestial bodies. Interest in these problems especially increased after the discovery of quasars. In all these questions, Einstein's general theory of relativity plays an important role, but the reader's preliminary acquaintance with this theory is not expected. The book deals with the listed issues. The first section of the book presents the modern theory of gravitation, its latest results. The second section is devoted to the equation of state of matter for the entire range of densities and temperatures. The third section describes the theory of the structure, slow and catastrophic evolution of individual celestial bodies and, in particular, quasars. The last section is devoted to cosmology, its classic and newest problems. The presentation is structured in such a way that the qualitative side of the questions is available to the widest range of readers: students and teachers of universities, technical and pedagogical universities, all interested in astrophysics.
