It will be the aim of the present little volume to outline for the general reader the course of the endless quest of man to recognise his position in the Universe around us by reasoning which could be based on astronomical observations. In doing so, we shall abstain from the obvious temptation to embellish our story with too many digressions in the domain of philosophy—which often places undue emphasis on the historical context of our subject— in an effort to trace all the sources whose eventual coalescence has resulted in the mighty stream ofhuman science as we know it today.
