This book represents a major new addition to the study of Islamic alchemy and the continuation of the work of Paul Kraus, who established the scholarly and scientific study of Jabirian Alchemy. Syed Nomanul-Haq bases his work on this early foundation, while also offering profound criticisms of certain theses of Kraus. This work is a critical edition, with translation, commentary, and extensive introductions, of important selections from the Kitdb al-ahjdr (Book of Stones). The second part of the book contains the Arabic text of the Kitab al-ahjdr; it is based on three manuscripts, two of which Kraus did not use in his earlier work. The Arabic text is carefully edited and includes in Part 3 the paraphrase of Aristotle's Categories, which itself is a significant new discovery. The book concludes with a full english translation of the Arabic text of Kitdb al-ahjdr (Book of Stones).
