During the Victorian era by far the most important naval vessel was thebattleship which was the standard measure of strategic power. Its positionbeing given even greater strength with the advent of the dreadnought in 1906.During World War I the dreadnought-type battleship was supreme.Battleships then had a long twilight ending in the middle of World War 2 whenthe aircraft carrier became the most important vessel in the fleet. The carriercontinued its dominance throughout the Cold War and retains it today,although such ships - and their associated air wings - are beyond the meansof all but a few rich nations. Thus, most modern navies centre around smallerships, such as destroyers and since the 1950s. frigates.
