LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborationsannounced in February 2016 and in June 2016 the first direct detections of gravitationalwaves (GWs) by LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors in September2015 and in December 2015. With the LIGO discovery announcements, two importantthings are verified: (i) GWs are directly detected in the solar-system; (ii) Blackholes (BHs), binary BHs and BH coalescences are discovered and measured experimentallyand directly with the distances reached more than 1 billion light years. These discoveries constitute the best celebration of the centennial of the genesis ofgeneral relativity. We refer the readers to Refs. 1 and 2 for the discovery and Refs.3 and 4 for a brief history of gravitational wave research. The aim of this two-volume title is to give a comprehensive review of one hundred years of development of general relativity and its scientific influences. This unique title provides a broad introduction and review to the fascinating and profound subject of general relativity, its historical development, its important theoretical consequences, gravitational wave detection and applications to astrophysics and cosmology. The series focuses on five aspects of the theory:Genesis, Solutions and EnergyEmpirical FoundationsGravitational WavesCosmologyQuantum GravityThe first three topics are covered in Volume 1 and the remaining two are covered in Volume 2. While this is a two-volume title, it is designed so that each volume can be a standalone reference volume for the related topic.Readership: Graduate students and researchers interested in general relativity.A web page will be set up for updates of the reviews of these two volumes. Please see http://astrod.wikispaces.com/ for announcement.
