This collection of ten short stories by Algernon Blackwood was first published in 1906. As with many of Blackwood's collections, not all the stories here are of equal quality and some are of the sort that one forgets a moment after having read the last line. However, a couple of them - "With Intent to Steal" and "The Strange Adventures of a Private Secretary in New York" - are worthwhile and memorable while a third one - "Keeping His Promise" - is, for my money, a subtle and absolutely enviable horror masterpiece.
