The use of algae for biofuel production is expected to play an important role in securing an alternative energy source in the near future, particularly in light of depleting fossil fuel reserves and the adverse environmental impact of fossil fuels. Algae presents a viable alternative because the production of algae for fuel, unlike other agro-based biofuels, does not compete with food production.
