This book is dedicated to the British Marxist historians - morespecifically, to that body of outstanding scholars that emerged outof the British Communist Party Historians Group. I do not claimthat this essay is a historical work in their tradition. For one thing,as a historian of political thought I have taken as my main primarysources the texts of Western political and social theory, and forother kinds of historical evidence I rely on secondary sources to anextent that many historians will undoubtedly find suspect - thoughI hope 1 have something new and interesting to say by way ofsynthesis and interpretation.
