Americans of color faced daunting barriers in the 1940s. Despite graduating first in his class at Harvard Law and clerking for Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, William T. Coleman Jr, the author of this work, was shut out of major East Coast law firms. But as the author writes,\"The times, they were a'changing.\" He went on to serve as senior counsel to the Warren Commission, investigating the assassination of John F. Kennedy. His legal work with Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund helped produce the historic 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. In 1975, he was appointed Secretary of Transportation by President Ford. In 1995, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton An African-American lawyer who broke several barriers during his career details his influential life--including his work on the Warren Commission, his contribution to the Brown v. Board of Education case, his tenure as secretary of transportation under President Gerald Ford and more--in a book with an introduction by a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Bill Coleman's story is one that younger generations should mark and inwardly digest, lest they forget the pioneers who helped to make a better America possible.
